PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana 2026: How to Claim Up to ₹78,000 Solar Subsidy in 2026

March 28, 2026

India’s Biggest Solar Subsidy Scheme (PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana 2026 Still Open — But For How Long?

If you own a home and pay an electricity bill, the government is literally offering you up to ₹78,000 to switch to solar. The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana — launched in February 2024 with a total outlay of ₹75,021 crore — is India’s flagship rooftop solar scheme, targeting 1 crore households by 2027.

With over 28 lakh installations already completed and nearly 58 lakh applications filed, the quota is filling up fast. If you’ve been sitting on the fence, this is the guide that will help you act.

What Is PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana?

PM Surya Ghar is a central government scheme under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). It provides direct financial assistance (called Central Financial Assistance or CFA) to residential consumers who install grid-connected rooftop solar systems.

The key promise: up to 300 units of free electricity per month and a direct subsidy credited to your bank account after installation.

Subsidy Slabs: How Much Will You Get?

Up to 2 kW: ₹30,000 per kW — so a 2 kW system gets you ₹60,000

2 kW to 3 kW: Additional ₹18,000 per kW for the next 1 kW

3 kW and above: Subsidy capped at ₹78,000 — regardless of system size

Note: You can install a 5 kW or 10 kW system, but the subsidy is only for the first 3 kW. The subsidy amount is calculated based on module capacity or inverter capacity — whichever is lower.

Am I Eligible?

  • You must be an Indian citizen with a valid, grid-connected electricity connection from your local DISCOM
  • Your rooftop must receive at least 4–5 hours of direct sunlight daily
  • You must use an MNRE-empanelled installer (like Dhanvi Solar Systems)
  • Panels must be from the ALMM (Approved List of Models and Manufacturers) — mandatory to avail subsidy
  • Tenants can install solar if the landlord permits, but the electricity connection and applicant name must match for subsidy eligibility

Step-by-Step: How to Apply

  1. Go to pmsuryaghar.gov.in and register with your electricity consumer account number and DISCOM details
  2. DISCOM evaluates net metering feasibility for your connection — this takes 7 to 30 days
  3. Select an empanelled vendor from the MNRE list and compare quotes — Dhanvi Solar is a verified installer
  4. Get the system installed — typically 1 to 3 weeks after order confirmation
  5. DISCOM installs a bi-directional net meter (cost: ₹0 to ₹5,000 depending on your state)
  6. Upload photos, commissioning certificate, and bank details on the portal
  7. Subsidy is credited directly to your bank account within 30 days of DISCOM inspection

Total timeline from application to subsidy receipt: approximately 45 to 90 days.

Financing: What If I Can’t Pay Upfront?

The scheme also includes collateral-free loan options:

  • SBI Surya Shakti Loan: Up to ₹2 lakh at 7% interest, 10-year tenure
  • PNB Solar Power Loan: Up to ₹5 lakh at 8.5% interest, 7-year tenure
  • NABARD Loans: For rural households via cooperative banks, starting at 6%

Example: A 3 kW system costing ₹1,00,000 after subsidy financed at 7% for 7 years = approximately ₹1,500 per month EMI. Your electricity bill saving in the same period: ₹1,800 to ₹2,500 per month. Net saving from Day 1.

Real Numbers: What Does a 3 kW System Actually Save?

Based on Maharashtra conditions (approx. 5.5 peak sun hours per day):

  • Annual generation: ~4,800 units
  • Self-consumed savings (70%): ~₹23,600 per year
  • Grid export credit via net metering (30%): ~₹4,300 per year
  • Total annual saving: ~₹28,000
  • Net cost after ₹78,000 subsidy: ~₹1,00,000 to ₹1,60,000 depending on system
  • Payback period: 3 to 5 years. Then 20+ years of virtually free electricity.

Important: The Quota Is Filling Up

The scheme aims to cover 1 crore homes. Once that quota is met, the subsidy may not be available. The subsidy is also paid directly to you (not the vendor) since 2025, protecting against overcharging. But this protection only applies if you go through the formal process.
